Of all the useful pond accessories that exist for winter use, a pond heater or deicer is an affordable and easily installed solution to protect your fish in a small pond. The video below will explain how they work, and where they work best.
In some ways the name “heater” isn’t entirely accurate although the elements of the device do heat up. A deicer would really be a better term for many of the models on the market because they don’t turn on until the water get’s cold enough to ice up.
This doesn’t allow them to help much if you have a tropical kind of fish where you want to maintain a bit warmer water (it might be best to check with some tropical aquarium supplies for something like that) but there’s no question that if you have intend to leave fish in your pond through the winter, a pond heater will be very useful.
