Pond Algaecides – Let’s Clarify A Few Things

Let’s talk for a minute about pond algaecides. You know, the stuff that kills algae outright and all that good stuff.

Hopefully your jaw isn’t hitting the floor, because yes, while I don’t like them, nor do I care to use them, algaecides may be needed now and then and because of that, I thought it was a good time to review the different kinds that are available today.

It wasn’t too long ago that the only thing listed as an algaecide with the EPA would have had copper in it. Some still do, but not all of them, thank goodness.

Basically we can sum this up pretty quick. A few have copper, some use peroxide, and some use various other chemical combinations and all of these varieties work in different ways to kill the beast.

No matter which one is used, they all create a die off reaction in the plant that can cause problems if you’re not prepared for it.

I talk about all of this and more in the video below. It’s well worth watching and you might even learn a new chemical related word that you could stump people with at parties, making this entire episode even more valuable.
