As much as we love ponds here, the fact is, when the weather get’s cold and the snow starts to fall, we aren’t as busy with water features as we are in the summer months.
One of the things that helps keep us entertained and connected with our backyard beauty is feeding wild birds.
Many years ago I received my first bird feeder as a Christmas present, and since then I’ve also given out a lot of feeders over the years. They are really a gift that gives enjoyment all year round.
So as we near this holiday, one of my best suggestions for gift giving is to consider a high quality bird feeder as an option. Usually there’s a model to fit every need and budget so it’s hard to go wrong with a present like this.
But this short article isn’t really about bird feeders as much as it’s about what you put in them.
I’ve bought A LOT of feed over the years, and tried many mixes and varieties…and I still experiment to this day, trying to get a little more mileage out of our feeding stations and keep the cost of such feed in line.
During the winter months here in Iowa, our feathered friends can really go through the food! The colder it get’s the more they eat, and the more good quality fats they need to get through the brutal cold.
There was a time when I tried to go the budget route and scrimp a little bit, but I think the quality (or lack thereof) of the feed led to more waste and ultimately more cost through the year, than going with a good quality feed that provided better sustainance and nourishment to the birds.
Anyway, with all that said, I wanted to introduce you to some friends of mine that I’ve used as a supplier of my bird feed supplier. E-BirdSeed.com has premium quality seeds and mixed feed that our birds just love…you won’t find any better quality anywhere. And the part I like, is that they deliver the feed right to your door and shipping is always free!
I never imagined I would be ordering bird feed off the internet, but I have to say that the convenience is really nice and I don’t have to worry about lugging the things around in a shopping cart at the local store. We still pick up a few bags locally when we get in a pinch but usually our orders come in so fast that we always have a fresh supply of feed on hand.
Most of the birds in our backyard love the Berry Necessities mix. But no matter what birds you have in your area, there is a feed or mix that’s perfectly suited to your birds.
So here’s what I’m doing this year for a lot of my friends and family. Since I know they’re already into actively feeding birds, I’m getting a gift certificate set up from E-BirdSeed so they can get whatever feed they want to use. It makes shopping for those hard to buy for folks pretty easy.
If you feed a lot of birds in the wintertime where you are, I highly recommend E-BirdSeed for your feed supply. We’ve been really happy with the service and quality products they provide.
